NCAA Numbers
Over 126,000
student-athletes receive either a full or partial athletic
scholarship each year totaling around $1 billion. These
scholarships are awarded directly by each academic
institution; however, the scholarships for undergraduate
student-athletes at Division I and Division II schools are
partially funded through the NCAA membership revenue
distribution. Division III schools offer only academic
scholarships. They do not offer athletic scholarships.
Unlike football, lacrosse is classed as an equivalency sport.
This simply means that coaches can share their financial aid
allocation between a larger number of players. If you are
good enough of course then a full scholarship could be in the cards.
The NCAA allows each division 1 lacrosse program 12.69
scholarships for men and 12 for women. In division 2 there
are 10.8 scholarships for men and 9.9 for women.
The chart below will help
the recruit and his parents better understand what the
difference is between DI, DII and DII programs with regards
to the recruiting process, rules and regulations.

There are 54 division 1 and 30 division 2 colleges that
offer lacrosse scholarships for men. That's a total of
1,009.26 in the NCAA. Don't make the mistake of only
concentrating on the top division 1 colleges. The
competition is intense, unless you are an absolute top
player you won't receive an offer. There is nothing wrong
with smaller division1or division 2 schools. What would you
rather have, a partial or full scholarship at a division 2
school or the offer of a walk on at one of the top schools?
At the end of the day it's your education that's
important.
