Introduction

This is undoubtedly a very exciting time in your lives, having obviously worked hard both on and off the field has earned you the opportunity to try and be recruited to play collegiate lacrosse.  We at LAX Recruiting commend your successes you have achieved so far and would love to help you through the recruiting process.

Before we go much further we want to make sure that both parents and players understand that we are excited about the potential of all recruits but we also want to instill upon all of you that this recruiting journey that you are stepping into hopefully is being pursued for the sake of a quality college education.  Sometimes during the glamour of the recruiting process we forget that education is what is important and that lacrosse is a vehicle that has possibly opened the door to additional opportunities at possibly a lower cost.

Coach John Thompson Sr. of Georgetown University asked the same question of all his recruits when he met them.  As the recruit would sit down in his office he would point to a deflated championship ball in a glass case on his desk and ask the recruit what that symbolized. The recruits would respond with things like "Teamwork Wins Championships", "We Expect Excellence", etc. Coach Thompson would then explain to the recruit that at some point the air will come out of the ball and at that time your education is what you have to fall back on.

This analogy is true for all sports, especially lacrosse.  Remember that the air could possibly come out of that ball at any time and when it does you must enjoy the school you select for the academic experience.

Now that you have decided to take this journey down the path of playing college lacrosse, there are some responsibilities for both the player and his parents:

Recruit
This is your dream! Make sure you share exactly what you are looking for with your parents prior to embarking on this very important journey. Do the best you can both academically and on the field! I cannot stress the importance of academics enough. The higher you're GPA and SAT scores are, the more choices you will have! Every coach will ask about grades first and then talked about his program and the student’s interests afterwards. Most schools offer significant discounts for students that have GPAs and SATs above a certain level. Stay Clean!  One incident concerning alcohol or drug abuse will kill any chance of a scholarship opportunity.  NCAA Division I and II schools can and will now administer drug testing so don't blow your chances.

Parents
It is very important that Parents be involved in their child's recruiting process. It is however very important that you remember that your child is the recruit, not you.  Way too often parents get involved and make decisions for their children based on what they want which could be very different from what their child wants.  Make sure you understand your child's dream and stay realistic, while we would all love our children to play at Virginia or Hopkins this level is not for every player.  Your son probably is not going to do what is necessary, and the coaches are too busy running their own programs to put a lot of time and effort into getting your athlete looked at by college coaches! So, that leaves YOU! You will have to organize, manage, and lead throughout this process.  Hopefully we at LAX Recruiting can help you along the way.
